Hyssop Tea for Bronchitis

As the interest in traditional herbal medicines grows, medicinal teas such as hyssop tea grow in popularity. Hyssop is very similar in appearance to lavender, distinct for its tall groups of purple flowers.  As a tea it is a soothing drink with a relaxing flavor that is very similar to mint. It has been known to be used for many different problems and is especially effective in treating respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is a medical illness where the bronchial tubes become swollen and inflamed which can cause many respiratory problems. Those that suffer from bronchitis suffer from symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, excess mucus, chest pains, fever, and shortness of breath. There are two types of bronchitis. The first type, acute bronchitis, is usually not serious and will heal on its own in a matter of a few days. Acute bronchitis may be caused by viral or bacterial infections. This illness is contagious and can be spread through contact. Risk of developing acute bronchitis is increased in people that smoke or those that are exposed to air pollutants. The second type of bronchitis is chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is more serious and lasts for long periods of time. The long term irritation and inflammation grows worse due to excessive coughing and should be treated as soon as possible.

Treatment

For those that suffer from acute bronchitis, treatment is not usually necessary. It is still recommended to visit a doctor however in order to rule out any potentially serious complications or illnesses. The majority of the time home treatments are suggested for those that contract acute bronchitis. In the case of chronic bronchitis treatments include: antibiotics, therapy, home remedies, and pulmonary rehabilitation in some cases.

How Hyssop Tea Helps

For those looking for home treatments for bronchitis, hyssop tea is an excellent herbal remedy to consider. Many of the active constituents in hyssop tea have antiviral and antibacterial properties which can help to fight off infections in the respiratory tract while simultaneously offering a soothing relief for a sore throat caused by excessive coughing. Hyssop tea also has the ability to work as an expectorant which makes it easier to break down and expel mucus from the throat. Another benefit to drinking this tea is that it can reduce the frequency of coughing as well, giving a sore throat a chance to rest and heal.
